 What is TIRAP?

What is TIRAP?

Employees in the Telecommunications industry face unique risks. Those involved in WhatIsTIRAP (1)construction, maintenance and support of wireless infrastructure are frequently encountering hazards. With the growing amount of workplace accidents, TIRAP has stepped in and dedicated themselves to addressing this issue. The TIRAP’s mission is to partner with stakeholders to promote safety, enhance quality, and enable education and advancement opportunities in the telecommunications workforce.
TIRAP stands for Telecommunications Industry Registered Apprenticeship Program and is a joint venture of telecommunications companies, industry associations and the U.S. Department of Labor (“DoL”). They develop DoL-credentialed apprenticeship programs available to qualified employers for career development of the telecommunications workforce.

TIRAP Responsibilities

With safety and education as the predominant goal, the TIRAP board is responsible for:

  • Identifying apprenticeable occupations
  • Developing and updating the work process for the program
  • Developing and updating a career lattice framework
  • Identifying additional areas of expertise and development of the minimum training requirement
  • Reviewing employer program progress
  • Coordinating and consulting with the DoLOA and other partners on program improvement
  • Facilitating communication within the industry
  • Supporting the industries needs for quality, safety and efficiency

TIRAP’s Goals

The overarching goal is the promotion of safety, job quality, and advancement opportunities. To achieve this outcome, TIRAP focuses on two main initiatives. They strive to create a framework of job task requirements that ensures safe and quality work is performed in accordance with industry standards. They also develop a systematic approach to provide certification of workers in positions that will reflect their specific job skills.
Finally, TIRAP aims to be constantly updated on the newest and most advanced methods within the industry. With each new safety concern and solution, TIRAP will incorporate new techniques and education into work processes. Those participating in registered apprenticeships will be better equipped to become leaders in the industry. They will be educated on the cutting-edge technology available to the workforce, and on how to utilize it safely.
