Breaking Down National Wireless Safety Alliance Certifications and Their Eligibility Requirements

Those in the telecommunications industry know how impactful National Wireless Safety Alliance (NWSA) certification can be for the improved safety of a worksite not only for tower workers but also for the stability and longevity of the tower itself. If tower workers are interested in becoming NWSA certified, it is important for them to know the available certifications and eligibility requirements for each level.

Certification Levels and Requirements

  • Telecommunications Tower Technician 1 (TTT-1) Certification
For the TTT-1 certification, candidates must meet the NWSA physical capability requirement and pass both the TTT-1 written and practical examinations. They also must comply with the NWSA policies and procedures listed in the Attestation Statement.
  • Telecommunications Tower Technician 2 (TTT-2) Certification
The requirements for TTT-2 certification are very similar to that of the TTT-1 certification. To qualify for TTT-2, candidates must meet all the requirements for TTT-1 and be officially TTT-1 certified to be eligible for TTT-2 certification. They also must pass the TTT-2 written and practical exams and comply with the NWSA policies and procedures listed in the Attestation Statement.
  • Antenna and Line Specialty Certification
Similar to TTT-1 certification needed to be eligible for TTT-2 certification, TTT-2 certification is required for candidates to be eligible for the Antenna and Line Specialty certification. They also must pass the Antenna and Line Specialty written exam and comply with the NWSA policies and procedures listed in the Attestation Statement.
  • Foreman Certification
Foreman certification candidates also must be TTT-2 certified and certified in at least one specialty, such as Antenna and Line. They also must pass the Foreman written exam and comply with NWSA policies and procedures listed in the Attestation Statement.

Just as telecommunications tower owners should encourage their workers to obtain NWSA certifications to ensure a safe jobsite, it is equally important to have comprehensive tower coverage to mitigate the risks involved with tower climbing.
